DESIGN FOR EXPERIENCE by Jinwoo Kim
I brought some valuable advice away from
his lecture, in the beginning, when he explained a definition of design for
experience, he used an example about Steve Jobs, as we know, he is one of the
pioneer designers who tried to innovate progressive design, and he said, when Job’s
traveled in India, Jobs was strongly influenced by that travel experience,
after, that personal experience is reflected in various apple’s
products.
After that, he mentioned John Dewey’s book
which is named “Art as experience” and in the book, the real experience is made
up 3 elements, which are Demarcated, Fulfilled and Integrated.
Firstly, Demarcated is amazing and
memorable experience in life, that experience must be clearly from start to the
end of memory, and then he showed a movie, the movie name was Gravity, in the
movie, when Sandra Bullock was docking with the space station, she encountered
unexpected problem and she was in the line between life or death, that seems
real experience.
Secondly, Fulfilled, that means fullness in
the philosophy, as the experience exceeded existing expectations, also he took
the movie which is ‘The secret life of walter mitty’ to sum up, the man was on
the deadline to take a white leopard picture, the man had waited long time to
discover the white leopard and then finally the white leopard appeared, but the
man did not take a picture, because he wants to keep his fulfilled experience
and did not want to lose the great time by taking a photo, beyond the aim of
camera, that is real experience.
Third thing was integrated, that means real
experience can permeate all aspects of daily life, the matches should be natural.
After that, he mentioned why real experience
is important for designer in this generation.
-
Just high technology is not
charming
-
Good design value is based on entire
personal experience
-
Nobody can not copy experience
inside of design
-
Same generation makes similar experience
Designer provides real experience for
people in their daily life using principle and method of design.
